This mic was sold missing the top metal mesh screen. Got a good deal as a result..In addition to protecting the capsule, the mesh also removes RF noise so it was necessary to replace it before using. Found a sheet of mesh online for $8. After receiving it, fiddled around and got a pretty decent replacement mesh piece out of it. The mic has a smooth sound but is a bit harsh above 8k. I'm planning to install the C1 mod kit from microphone-parts as I expect it will take make this good mic great!

C1 gen 2
I had a first gen C1 and this was my first time using a gen 2. The Gen 2 has the same high frequency emphasis, but is less harsh, more smooth and pleasing. I did an A/B with a Rode NTK tube mic (with RK-12 capsule) and it was uncanny how similar the C1 gen 2 and the NTK sound. The C1 has the kind of nice compressed mid-highs. Out of the box the C1 gen 2 sounds pretty good. I may also put a micarts C1 mod kit into it to take it to the next level. The exterior build quality is solid, and many of the components inside are high quality (WIMA caps and polystyrene coupling capacitor), but there are also lower grade electrolytics (not sure if they are in the signal path and or not).
