A must-read for any man who is currently in or considering a long-term relationship
A Married Man's Survival Guide is one of those rare gems – an indispensable book. Which isn't to say it is a great book (though it is very good at what it does) or that is a book for everyone (though I would recommend it to any man who is currently in a long-term relationship or who is considering getting into a long-term relationship anytime soon). For its intended audience however (men in long-term relationships) it is most certainly a must-read-and-read-again-and-again.
The aptly-named Survival Guide represents the self-help genre at its best. Instead of stroking your ego with feel-good phrases intended to encourage and “empower,” it demands discipline and commitment from the reader. This book offers a map toward building a better relationship with your wife or partner, but only if you are willing to put in the real work to achieve the desired results. No easy solutions are promised or on offer here. If such easy answers are what you are looking for, then follow the authors' own advice and give this book a pass.
One of the Survival Guide's real strengths is that it is almost entirely practical in scope. There are no lengthy discussions of male-female communication and relationship dynamics. The Guide focuses solely on improving or fixing your relationship, without loading you down with a bunch of information on what it is about the differences between men and women that makes these strategies work (though a number of books are cited by the authors throughout the Guide which do provide such information for the curious). The upside to this is that the book is short and can be read and re-read at your leisure and any given section can be quickly consulted when necessary.
A Married Man's Survival Guide is a must-read for any man who is currently in or considering a long-term relationship. Any reader would also be strongly advised to take the authors' recommendation to seek out a men's team - if not already a member of such a team - as well in order to have the resources and support necessary to help maintain the discipline and commitment to self-improvement necessary to fully implement the Guide's information and advice.
