10 KG Large Capacity Propane Furnace Deluxe Kit with Crucible for melting metal
    May 09, 2023
    Very good first furnace
I'm very pleased with the furnace. The setup was intuitive and worked as expected the first time. I agree with others that the tongs are not a good fit, particularly with the 10KG crucible (which is fairly heavy even empty). While you're ordering new tongs, get some rigidizer for an initial coating on the kaowool insulation and some refractory cement to go over that. In case it's helpful for others: for the rigidizer, I bought a quart tub of Cabosil Fumed Silica for less than $15. Even with a liberal coat (if you can call it that), I didn't use a quarter of the container. After mixing it in water, I applied it with a paintbrush. It dried in about 24 hours. For the refractory cement, I got a 10lb tub of Rutland 211 Dry Mix refractory cement. I put on two coats, which used about half of the tub, but that ended up being too thick in places. I was initially thinking I wanted to make a plaster cast but in hindsight that's not necessary, and besides it doesn't leave enough room for the 10KG crucible plus the tongs to wrap around it. One word of caution with the refractory cement (besides, of course, don't breathe in the dust): it's very easy to add too much water, though you can balance it out by adding more cement.
