I am attached to the brand Akai due to their GX heads because they have a super long life without compromising sound quality. BASF- Decent quality reel to reel tapes
One concern you might have about reel to reel tapes is that they are old. The chemical components can deteriorate with time and the tape can actually stick and loose the magnetic properties. I am glad to report that at least the BASF tapes resist the fade of time and tested on calibrated machine they perform beautifully. I could complain a bit about the noise (could be combatted with DBX) but the frequency response and sound dynamic overshadows it. Look for tapes marked LN if they are still available.
