A little extra grip.
The grip's adds just a bit extra toward the camera base plate to increase the purchase of the last two fingers. That that increases the ability to easily apply torque to the body to balance larger lenses. For large hands, even a bit more would be nice (a large size?). It does not increase the depth of the finger groove for the index and middle fingers. A very workable design.
