Kelty Compression Stuff Sack Deep Blue, X-Large
Mar 22, 2016
XL bag holds more than I expected.
As an "elderly" hiker and camper my needs have shifted from Spartan to being more comfortable. The question was how to get my "stuff" to fit in my pack. I have used compression sacks in the past, but some were fine, but many were constructed so poorly that they never survived the trip. So far so good with this one. I was able to put a large down sleeping bag, a small fleece blanket, and the fly from my tent in the bag and compress it enough so that all fit in the bottom compartment of my High Sierra pack. I did use a wrap around compression strap to reduce the basketball effect due to compressing the materials I placed in the sack. I think this would be a good addition to have for just about any compression bag regardless of size. Overall I can't complain about the quality of the bag. Like most things, I wish this and all products that Americans invented or designed were made in the USA and not elsewhere.
Mini Electric Fence Light (4-Pack) For Chargers 3 Joule and Higher
Jan 31, 2017
Works well, but takes a lot of adjusting
Light is bright and the product works as described. The major drawback is getting the gap adjusted correctly. This takes some time and may (???) vary with soil conditions after the install. A good ground is a must ! I bought 4 and only one worked correctly when installed. The others took over an hour of "gap setting" to get the light to flash. As soil gets wet, the gap distance needed adjusted again and will need adjusted when the soil dries in the spring. Other fence indicators or more expensive, but require almost no attention after the basic install. I wish I would have bought the competitors model even though I would have spent more money at least once you clamp it to the fence it works with NO adjusting.
ALPS Mountaineering Mystique 1.0 Tent: 1-Person 3-Season One Color One Size
Apr 06, 2016
First new tent since 1969 and this one is another winner!
When my old Eureka finally "gave up the ghost" last summer it was time to get a new tent. So much has changed since the spring of 1969 with respect to tent styles and quality. In some regards my old tent was made of better nylon, but it came with the price of being heavy. What I have found so far is this. It is easy to set up if you stake it down completely before you do anything else. I wish the floor on the ALPS 1.0 would be made with a sturdier nylon. Perhaps a coat of floor refinish may be in order for this model or most likely I will make a footprint for it out of Tyvek. What I really like the most is that there are two "doors and they are on the side of the tent which makes it very easy to enter and exit especially for an old camper like me. The netting is on the fine side and I cannot comment on its durability, but it is an early concern for me. Other than that, the tent should last me the last years of my hiking and camping. I really like the full coverage of the fly, but I wish ALPS would have chosen a dark color for the fly rather than the orange. This is just me being picky. Ever try to sleep in under a tent with a light color fly during a full moon? I bought the 1.0, but in hindsight, the 1.5 may have been the better purchase. It is 6 inches wider and a foot longer, but you would have better storage inside for a pack or a dog. The vestibule on the 1.0 is adequate, but that is all it is. My large 90L High Sierra, does not fit well in the tent with me. I am a true 6 footer and the interior is fine, but not so fine with a large pack or large dog. The one thing that I really like is the fact that I can sit up on the inside and change clothes without too much difficulty. That is what I hated most about my old Eureka, it had almost no room to sit up and change. You would think that after a couple hundred nights, I would have gotten used to that, but I never did. I like this tent. The quality is better than I expected. It is light weight and does compress reasonably well. If I were to buy another one again, I would splurge and get the 1.5.
