HP Agilent Keysight 3466A Digital Multimeter

Old, excellent performance, battery operated.

The hp 3466A multimeter was introduced in 1978. It's a full-featured 4 1/2 digit voltmeter that sold new for $650. You can get a new, tiny, Chinese made, handheld voltmeter which appears to have the same abilities for under $50. Don't be fooled. When the 3466A claims "true rms", it means the full audio spectrum, when the tiny one makes the same claim, it's probably only true for 60Hz. The specifications for the 3466A are the guaranteed specifications from a great manufacturer; the tiny's specs are largely imaginary. The 3466A is not small, it comes in a "clamshell" case that would befit a Giant Clam. It won't fit in your pocket, but it can be easily carried with it's folding handle - or it could fit in a backpack. What is unique to this instrument is that it is battery operated so you can use this excellent voltmeter anywhere. It takes a lot more than the little 9-volt battery that the tinies use to power this voltmeter and its LED display, but the rechargeable replacement battery (a small lead-acid) is still available though expensive - at about $50. Of course, you can use the voltmeter plugged in to the ac line, too. This is a piece of equipment from an earlier era that is not just a collectible, but still highly useful and in some ways superior to what is available new.
