Mouse Guard: Coloring Book ~ Petersen, David V GOOD

An Honest Review by a Color Pencil Artist

The artwork is very in line with the Mouse Guard genre - visually appealing, consistent proportions, and artful. The paper quality and ink quality are solid. Lots of two-page scenes for those who enjoy that kind of thing. I appreciate the diversity in topic and layout for coloring subjects. However, being a coloring book, I would have preferred more "white" space on many of the pages. A number of them have so much black ink in it, that my efforts to add color seems contrived and displaced. Too often the shading and backgrounds are already inked in by the original artist, David Petersen, where I, as the color pencil artist, would have preferred that this was left to me and my discretion. This inking makes the images appear on the heavy, weighty side and requires adjustment on the coloring to help make images appear in harmony. A couple of the pages were blown-up images to the point that pixels were too evident. This makes the drawing line weights inconsistent. I prefer coloring books that offer artwork on one side of each page and perforation so that I can remove pages easily for storage, display, or other purposes. I would have paid more for these options. Overall, I'm not disappointed with my purchase, but I do see areas where the product could have been improved.

First-time playmat owner

As my first personal playmat, I'm pleased with my purchase. Price on par with product quality. . The stitching quality is good and artwork did not disappoint. Would buy again if there's an artwork found matching my sensibilities. My favorite part about this product is that it isn't overwhelmed by product logos. The product and artist names are discreetly placed in the bottom corner with a subtle design. That's it. Nothing more except the artwork I want to look at while playing my similarly colorful cards. Much approved!
