1960 TOPPS 377 ROGER MARIS
Terrific card of the 1960 American League MVP Roger Maris. Maris had been traded to the Yankees prior to the 1960 season by the Kansas City Athletics. Note on the card itself that Roger is wearing a Kansas City A's uniform. TOPPS would take photos of ballplayers with and without caps; the reason being that in the event the player was sold or traded, TOPPS could easily use a close up portrait instead. TOPPS would also sometimes simply just airbrush out the team emblem on the player's ball cap. So on this card TOPPS used a photo of a capless Maris (nice crew cut!) instead of him wearing his K.C. hat. This was the first of 2 consecutive MVP Awards that the Yankee slugger would win. Roger beat out teammate Mickey Mantle both times for the award, no small feat. While not difficult to find, the 1960 TOPPS 377 ROGER MARIS is plagued by typical printing issues by TOPPS, notably centering. You can find a nicely centered mid-range example (EX) for around $50; NM for about $75-100.

Magic Johnson's Best Basketball Card!
I know. Most of you say "what the #@$^ ???" By "best" I do not mean most valuable. If this were the case the 1980 Topps Larry Bird/ Magic Johnson Rookie card would win hands-down. Ok, so what is special about this card? Well first it is Magic's 2nd card and it features a larger photo of him in a spectacular "action" shot (his "Super Action" card in the same set is very similar as well). Even better, when have you seen a player having more fun playing ball? While the photo quality is not as sharp as would appear later on, this image is still a terrific shot of "Showtime" in action. Even the classic 1987 Fleer Basketball Magic Johnson card does not top this one. Topps did not produce another basketball set after this 1981 issue until 1992. The 1981 Topps Basketball cards are not hard to find; however the cardboard quality is typically poor and finding well-centered examples is somewhat of a challenge. You can pick up a nice PSA or SGC graded MINT example for around $35-$45. The ":Super Action" Magic card is even more affordable.

Can't Go Wrong With Hammerin' Hank
Hank Aaron, as well as his cards, are under-appreciated. Besides his 1954 Topps Rookie card, most of his cards are affordable. Take this 1971 Topps 400 Hank Aaron for example. You can pick up a nice mid-grade example for around $25. Compare to a mid-grade Mays ($35), Ryan ($65) or Clemente ($75) and you can see what I mean. It does not have to be this particular Aaron card, but any AARON card is a MUST-HAVE for any vintage card collection (I recommend at least the 1974 Topps 1 Hank Aaron All-Time Home Run King card).
