    Pharos Traveler PTL535e PDA/GPS Receiver
After having purchased a Garmin M3 pda with integrated GPS (and reviewing it for Ebay), I thought that I would give a unit from Pharos a try. I own several add-on GPS units from Pharos and have had pretty good results. The Pharos unit I acquired is the Traveler PTL535e. The pda specs are middle range (3.5" qvga screen, 312mhz xscale processor, 128mb flash rom and 64mb sdram, wi-fi). It runs Windows Mobile 5.0. At first glance, the Pharos 535e does not have a pop open antenna (the Garmin M3 does). On powering up the unit I noticed that there were no GPS programs shown on the Today screen. After searching the program area, I found that the Pharos does not come with any GPS software in rom! Zero, zilch, nada. Whereas the Garmin M3 has programs to access the GPS features, the Pharos 535e functions only as a pda until appropriate software is loaded. When the right software is loaded, the GPS functions normally, but with seemingly less sensitivity than the Garmin (remember that "missing" antenna?). In real life side-by-side testing, both units worked well. A big plus, however, for the Pharos is that it has wi-fi (the M3 does not), so it has more functionality as a pda.

MINT Olympus OM-D E-M1X 20.4MP Mirrorless Body Only
    Sep 14, 2020
    As good as it gets!
The Olympus OM-D E-M1x represents the high point of micro 4/3 camera development. It simply has features (and their implementation) that can be found in no other platform. While large for a micro 4/3 camera, it is much smaller than a similar full frame camera equivalent. The legendary weather sealing of the Olympus make it useful in a whole range of conditions, while the extensive (both native and adapted) lens selection make it perfect for a photo enthusiast.

    Samsung HZ30W--Perfect carry-along!
Have you ever been in a situation where you wish you had brought along a camera to capture an unusual or once-in-a-lifetime occurance? Most people now own cellphones that have picture (and movie) capabilities built in, but the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. And bringing along a DSLR or a large super-megapixel camera with you all of the time is simply not convenient (driving down to the grocery store or walking the dog). The Samsung HZ30W fills that void very nicely, with suprisingly little tradeoffs. The Samsungs' specs are very nice-12.1 megapixels with a 15x zoom. But the real deal-maker is the 24mm (35mm camera equivalent) wide angle starting point of that zoom lens. Most point-and-shoots start at 28mm or higher, and that extra area that the 24mm lens can capture makes all the difference in the world. The zoom range is also phenomenal-24mm to 360mm, so you can get very nice panoramic shots (or group photos) as well as zooming in and capturing distant objects. The antishake mechanism is very effective (a must with long focal lengths). Low light and macro capabilities round out the nice features of this camera. I won't bother you with the full list of specifications and picture taking modes (these are available all over the place) but I'll get to the bottom line. Simply put, the photos taken with this camera are superb. Sharp, nicely exposed photographs with rich colors in all but the most extreme conditions (and surprisingly good even then). I bought this camera because I've owned a Samsung HZ10W (a slightly less endowed sibling) and was simply floored by the photographic results. After giving that particular camera to my daughter, it only made sense to replace it with another Samsung of that particular product line. I have been taking photos for 50 years and have owned very simple and very complex cameras, but I can truly say that this camera is one of very few that makes it pleasurable, convenient and fun to always carry around.
