Most capable handheld scanner
1 of 1 found this helpful With the firmware updates for ProVoice (free) and DMR (paid), this scanner offers the most scanning capability available in a handheld in the present scanner market. It is best programmed using the free Sentinel software. If you have never had a Home Patrol style scanner before, there is a learning curve, but the effort will pay off handsomely.

Nostalgic for good performance? Try this.
Part of my fondness for this radio is nostalgia. It was my second non-broadcast band receiver and the first one that could tune VHF Low Band and UHF. The best feature at the time was the squelch.
I also enjoy having the AC power and cord built in to the radio, instead of the electrically noisy wall warts of today. As a portable, it works beautifully on batteries as well.
This is a member of a generation of receivers (including some scanners) that had more than one collapsible whip antenna for better wide band coverage. It also has an external antenna connection on the side of the case, but adding a substantial outside antenna tends to overload the receiver. It hears better on its own whips.
The reason I gave this radio 4 stars instead of 5 is that every one I've seen so far has a burned out lamp. It was pre-LED, of course, and light bulbs do burn out after a while.
