Cable housing fails when trying to upshift

I installed the cable and tried to shift gears on the test stand. The cable housing kinked when I tried to shift up. I readjusted the deraileur and again the housing kinked. 3rd time, same result, so I stopped. When disconnected from the cable, the deraileur operates and feels just fine, no binding, stickiness or abnormal operation. Quite disappointing, it looks like the housing is collapsing internally when put under axial compression while upshifting (SRAM trigger shifter).
