Armed with great songs
Elvis Costello's 3rd album and 2nd with the Attractions is his 3rd classic in a row. All the tracks are at least quite good, some brilliant. Oliver's Army was the huge UK hit even if the piano part sounds rather like ABBA's Dancing Queen. Album opener Accidents Will Happen is even better though it still sits better as an album track than a follow-up single to OA. Green Shirt is also brilliant, another melodic new wave number, as is 4 songs in a row - Goon Squad is a storming new wave rocker, Busy Bodies is another great melodic song, Sunday's Best is another highlight - new wave waltzy tune and Moods For Moderns is a great pop rock song. The original album was written entirely by Elvis but the bonus track here, Peace Love and Understanding was actually written by Nick Lowe who produced the album. Nick also won the Radio 1 D.J's award that year 1979 in the British rock and pop awards for most outstanding contributions to music and on this album it's not hard to see why. Nick's production is clear and crisp throughout, making this album a must hear. But this was very much the end of Elvis Costello and the Attractions as a new wave act and Elvis would never quite sound as good as any of the 1st 3 albums

A dream come true
Thee Oh Sees are still a band who can do very little wrong. This album from 2011 further illustrates why they are among the very best alternative rock bands along with Ty Segall. Combining shoe gazing rock, punk, garage rock, psychedelic rock, the likes of Carrion Crawler has a Syd Barrett style of guitar playing, Contraption, Robber Barons and The Dream are awesome examples of hugely loud, raucous shoe gazing rock with John Dwyer and Brigid Dawson sharing lead vocals, Brigid sounding particularly sexy throughout. This stands as one of their best albums but they have since released a string of awesome albums in the last decade since. Thee Oh Sees, despite a few name changes, are simply one of a kind

Canadian band Rush's underrated fellow countrymen
Max Webster were a Canadian band who had a short career spanning about just 5 years - and 5 albums in the late 70s. This compilation includes tracks from each album plus 2 great live tracks Hangover and Waterline. Others like Check, High Class and Here Among the Cats are almost heavy metal in sound but there's also plenty of brilliant heavy prog rock songs here - Million Vacations, Party, Gravity, Oh War, Night Flights and Paradise Skies(a UK minor hit single). For me though, the best is saved til last, ie Battlescar - a truly awesome collaboration with fellow Canadians Rush and a fitting end to an excellent compilation. This is definitely worth hearing if you're a fan of old school 70s hard /prog rock.
