A must for every middle school library
My daughter and I just loved this wonderful book. A little girl, Lucy, finds her confidence, after being humiliated in school, with the help of a Wise and funny Magical Corgi. Wise One, Wilbur teaches Lucy to fly and they journey back in time to meet and talk to her favorite artists. They face exciting challenges, jump into paintings like van Gogh'z Starry Night and Springtime by Botticelli. We both learned so much about art. This book is beautifully written, descriptions are poetic, and the themes of self esteem, overcoming school anxiety and friendship are treated brilliantly. The author is a professor of art history so she knows what she's talking about. I recommend this book to adults and children. It's just wonderful also it won a Mom's Choice Award and Readers Favorite Best Educational Book of 2015 and it's published in Spanish.

Buy it, start reading, and you’ll fall in love.
The Crystal Navigator might be my all time favorite book. I read it with my 8 and 10 year old children, and they loved it so much they want me to read it again. Professor Lodge ‘s characters are so real, her descriptions of Italy so beautiful you feel like you’re right there with Lucy and Wilbur. My kids loved Wilbur, Lucy’s magical Wise One, an adorable Corgi they want a Corgi. Lodge’s second book Mona Lisa’s Ghost is even better. Lucy & her best friend genius Sam solve the mystery of who stole the Mona Lisa. Both books have been published in Spanish and Japanese. I think they’ve won prestigious book awards. Get it, start reading, you’ll fall in love.

Spectacularly Imaginative but not a good value. Amazon sells it new for less
I couldn't put this book down. It's supposed to be for middle graders, but I am in my forties and I absolutely loved it. I can't say enough about this book: the story is brilliant, fast-paced, the writing is magnificent, witty, funny, poetic, the characters are endearing. Lucy is a perfect heroine, brave but still getting things wrong. Sam her genius friend invents great high tech gadgets for her adventure through the catacombs under Paris, down underground rivers where sightless, evil monsters lurk, back to 16th century France to ask Leonardo da Vinci for help saving his famous portrait which 500 years later is going berserk. You will come away from reading this book breathless, wanting more, and informed about art history, science, renaissance music and costume, even Einstein made simple. It's got one of the best bombshell endings of all time. Lucy is helped by her lifelong friend and Wise One, a Corgi named Wilbur. The author has a PHD in art history and Philosophy and she is the granddaughter of famed Dorothy Kunhardt author of best-selling baby book of all time, Pat the Bunny. You won't be sorry, but the price here is too much. Get a new copy at Amazon for much less. author's illustration of Wilbur
