Can't beat 400 HP
3 of 3 found this helpful I went from a WRX to this. Needless to say, I don't know what to do with all this extra torque!
PROS:
- POWER: There is 300 lb-ft available right away at 1500 RPMs. You can start the car in 3rd gear and not bog the engine. You can break the tires loose if you floor it in first or second gear, and chirp the tires on the shift to 3rd.
- SOUND: You can't beat the sound of a nice pushrod V8. I have a Magnaflow cat-back and it sounds great. It's got a very deep/low burble to it. A very nice thing though is that it's extremely quiet on the highway. You can barely hear it. When you floor it, though, it screams.
- QUALITY: Sit inside one for 5 minutes and you'll realize that this is the nicest GM interior you've sat in. Since this car is made in Australia (this is not a Pontiac, so don't be scare away - it is just a rebadged Holden Monaro), it seems to have a higher than usual amount of quality. The doors close with a solid feel to them. You don't hear much road noise. The seats are extremely comfortable. And like I said the interior looks amazing (i have the red/black interior.)
- MISC.: The steering has a nice heavy feel to it. The handling is good. The problem is that it feels like it's leaning a lot. But once you get used to that the car will surprise you. Some say the styling is boring, but it's grown on me. I do not like the hoodscoops, I think it makes the car look strange at certain angles. My car doesn't have the scoops. I like the styling because the car sits low and has a wide, aggressive stance. For those that say it looks like a Grand Am or Cavalier, have not walked around it in person.
CONS:
- SHIFTER: The throws are very long, and it has a rubbery feel to it. This was immediately the first thing I didn't like about the car. I highly recommend getting a GMM Ripshift short throw shifter. It cuts way down on the throws and gives it a more solid feel. It also has the 1-4 forced shift installed. I got rid of that with the CAGS eliminator. The clutch takes some time to get used to coming from a WRX. This clutch is hydrualic and may feel weird at first.
- WHEEL HOP: Depending on the tire and conditions on the ground, you can get wheel hop when you take off. This can be fixed with drag bags, or an upgraded suspension. I haven't done it yet, but I may look into some solutions to this in a little while. For what it's worth, the new Mustangs have the same issue.
Overall I think this is a great car. It's perfect for long highway commutes or just cruising around town at 35 mph in 6th gear. Of course when you want to have fun: downshift, turn off the radio, and enjoy.
The only cars that can rival the performance per dollar of this would be the EVO and STI. With either one though, you will lose a lot of creature comforts... plus you can't do any kickass powerslides!

Very Fun Driver's Car
7 of 7 found this helpful I had a 2002 WRX. Bought it used with 30k miles on it and sold it with 105k miles. This was a very fun car to drive around. It's quick and has a lot of grip for curvy roads.
With snow tires on, in addition to the AWD, this thing is unstoppable in the snow. Keep the RPMs below 3k and it'll go exactly where you point it. Floor it, and you will find yourself in a fun, controlled slide through the snow.
Subaru's reliability is excellent. I never had any real problems besides basic maintainence things.
The only thing I thought could be improved was the transmission. I got a Kartboy short throw shifter (which is excellent) and that made the car a lot of fun to drive. However, getting it into first gear could only be done at very low speeds and that would always require me to double-clutch. Reverse would occassionally grind as well even if the clutch was pushed down all the way. Despite those issues, I never had any problems with it. When I sold the car, it was still on the original clutch and still had a lot of life left in it.
