Great movie, lousy DVD
This review is for this DVD, not for the film, which most critics regard as Fassbinder's masterpiece. Don't be fooled by the cover, which is lifted from the now out-of-print Criterion BRD collection. The source used must have been a 240p video blown up just enough to be viewable, but the actual picture just floats in the middle of screen with wide black bars on all sides . To blow it up to fill an entire widescreen TV would leave an unwatchable level of detail. I purchased this because there is no other Region 1 version of this film currently available, and I am more angry than disappointed by the lousy quality of the print used for this DVD..

A rare foray into comedy from Fassbinder
This is probably Fassbinder's only true comedy, and he succeeds in fashioning an often funny look at an egomaniacal author suffering from writer's block and a lack of money. Kurt Raab was a natural comic performer, and one wishes Fassbinder had used him more often in such roles. Margit Carstensen is practically unrecognizable as his crazed "groupie," and she shines as well in a comic role.
