    If.... (Criterion Collection) (DVD, 1968)
    Mar 26, 2025
UK Masterpiece from the late 60’s.
If (1968) Predecessor to Dead Poets Society, except this film is set in an English school. Fascinating unorthodox direction by Lindsay Anderson. Break-out role for actor Malcolm McDowell as Mick Travis. Whips versus the Skum. Hard lessons to be learned about life in a strict boarding school for boys in London. Actress Christine Noonan steals the show as The Girl. Filmed in both color and black and white. Surreal storyline with a strong build-up of tension. The ending is unforgettable. Outstanding soundtrack music, especially “Sanctus” by Missa Luba. Requires two viewings to fully appreciate. Late 60’s cinema masterpiece. Grade A
The Magnificent Ambersons (DVD, 2012) Orson Welles ~ Booth Tarkington ~ NICE!

A Flawed Masterpiece of Cinematic Art
The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) Rise and fall of a rich family in a small midwestern town. A flawed masterpiece written and directed by Orson Welles. Astute performances by the Mercury Theater players, notably Joseph Cotton as Eugene, Ann Baxter as Lucy and Tim Holt as George. Actress Agnes Morehead steals the show as Fanny. Brilliantly written and photographed by Welles. Outstanding sound. Experimental dialogue technique used with several actors talking over each other in separate conversations. Lessons to be learned about the ramifications of social snobbery and family arrogance. Set design is ingenious. Film drags at times with overly-long conversations between Amberson family members. Excellent soundtrack music by Bernard Hermann. Grade A-
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (DVD, 1948)Factory Sealed New
    May 19, 2025
One of the All-Time Best Films.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) Director John Houston’s masterpiece film about three American prospectors in Mexico in search of gold in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Based on a novel by writer B. Traven. Classic performances by actors Humphrey Bogart as Fred C. Dobbs, Walter Huston as Howard and Tim Holt as Curtin. Lessons to be learned about human greed and its ultimate cost. Actor Alfonso Bedoya steals the show as the bandit ‘Gold Hat.’ Outstanding, iconic screenplay by John Huston with many quotable moments. “I don’t have to show you any stinking badges.” (Bedoya) Dynamic soundtrack by Max Steiner. Astute cinematography by Ted McCord. Definitely one of the all-time best. Grade A+
