Decent sound quality, but underwhelming for the price
My Smart Fortwo cabrio already had two Kicker Hideaway 8" subs behind each seat, and I was very satisfied with them overall. I've owned the JL Audio 10w7 and was blown away by the performance, so I had my eye on this Stealthbox for over a year. I finally decided to bite the bullet... which was over $1,000 when you factor in the required amplifier. I went with the JL Audio Slash v2 250/1 amp for this sub, which seemed like the perfect pairing.
The installation is VERY challenging, but I was prepared for this, having already read several install experiences of it. JL didn't waste a single square inch of space, so it is a tight fit, but a very good fit (once you figure out the puzzle of getting it into place).
My biggest disappointment isn't with the sound quality itself... it IS good. But it's not any better (and possibly not even on par with) two Kicker Hideaway 8" subs... at less than half the price. The Stealthbox is able to hit a slightly deeper bass note than the Kicker Hideaway, but everything else is just a bit muddier and muted than I was expecting from a sub of this price. Having been through the nightmarish install process and the underwhelming sound versus other options out there, I would suggest saving your money and sanity and just get a couple of Kicker Hidewaways. I don't REGRET having this sub because it sounds fine. However, if I could go back in time with what I know about the sound quality now, I would give it a hard pass.
I'm now planning on just getting two of the 10" Kicker Hideaway subs, which have essentially the same dimensions and plug as my 8" Kickers. Hopefully THOSE will give me the sound improvements I'm really seeking.
