Really good camcorder; recommend using ProDuo, not DVD
2 of 3 found this helpful I already have one a Sony HDR-UX10 camcorder, and the one I've just purchased on ebay is my second unit. I am part of a ghost hunter group and these camcorders work very well with night shot and regular lighting.
I've seen reviews stating that the touch-screen menus are unintuitive, but the menus on this unit are pretty much the same as the more expensive HDD units (HDR-SR10/11/12, etc). Bottom line, the menus take getting used to, just as you would become familiar with menus on any electronic device.
I personally use higher speed Sandisk VideoHD ProDuo cards, which actually work great for roughlly 3hrs of HiDef recording an 8GB. I tried a slower speed ProDuo card but it occasionally causes a few frames to be jerky in HiDef. It still works good in standard format.
I've also heard bad things about using DVD's. I made the mistake of finalizing two DVD/RW discs. I unwittingly finalized two before figurint out that there is no way to unfinalize and use them again. Finalizing is normally how you make the DVD/-R discs usable in your DVD player.
HiDef works great, particularly for our ghost hunting endeavors. This is why I'm purchasing a second unit... one for hand-held, one static on tripod. This camcorder is able to snap 4MP digital still photos, even while you are recording video. Only drawback is that the flash is rendered inoperative while recording in video mode, which makes sense.
Overall, my personal opinion... if you want a really good quality HiDef camcorder that records audio in Dolby 5.1 surround (or stereo), and if the HDD units are out of your price range, the HDR-UX10 does an awesome job when you use the high-speed ProDuo memory as mentioned above.
PROS:
- It's pretty lightweight (about 1.5 pounds)
- software (Picture Motion Browser) is decent and works with the facial recognition feature of the camcorder. Also converts your HiDef video/audio to WMV files or burns them to disc
- Great video and audio quality
- Accepts tele and wide lenses
- Nightshot works good with built-in IR and with additional IR units
CONS:
- Potentially choppy video depending on whether DVD or slower ProDuo media are used
- Somewhat difficult menus

Great plot, acting and music...
"Crimson Tide" is great! I had seen this high suspense, high action movie about 2 years ago on cable and enjoyed it considerably. XM Radio plays the Crimson Tide's sound track on occasion, so I have been occasionally remined about the movie itself by hearing its powerful soundtrack (Hans Zimmer - Composer for both this movie and "The Rock" is great!) I finally broke down and decided to buy Crimson Tide here on ebay (great seller!), and I'm glad I did so.
