Noir: A Novel by Christopher Moore - SIGNED FIRST EDITION
Feb 28, 2024
COP A SQUAT READ NOIR
Such a pleasure to read a LARGE PRINT copy of NOIR by CHRIS MOORE. I have read many books by him. Good fiction writers use real places, real people and real events in their stories and Chris has mastered the technique. Let's hop on the WABAC machine and take a trip back in time to San Francisco 1947: the joints were jumpin, the broads were doin the Jigaboo. Some cops were on the take, some guys on the lamb. G Men were huntin Commies and UFO's were invading our great country. The Wops lived in one section; the Micks in another; all the Chinks were in Chinatown. The city's population exploded after WW2. You could eat a full meal for 2 bits (25 cents). Sammy "Two-Toes", a 4F washout, works in a gin joint run by a real prick, Sal. Sam meets a dame who he frequently refers to as Toots or the Cheese. And the story takes off from there: G men (referred to as tax men who don't know their left hand from their right), a deady black momba, a moonman (but no one knows where he's really from), a crooked cop by the name of Pookie, the Bohemian Society ( a powerful bunch you don't wanna cross). Other colorful characters make the story a laugh out loud romp: Milo (a cab driver who hates to drive), Lone Jones (a gentle Black giant), General Remy (a bumbling Army mucky muck). And mustn't forget the Chinese compliment: Moo Shoes, Lois Fong and Uncle Mao. Together, these characters, the time frame and the settings make for a fantastic fun fast read. CHRIS MOORE never disappoints. The story and the words used to tell it are of that time to keep it authentic. There is a warning on the first page, CM is not trying to offend any of his readers. A story taking place in 1947 uses 1947 lingo. I hope you enjoyed the ride.
Dekok and the Sorrowing Tomcat

Dekok was a kay-oh-kay!
DeKok and the Sorrowing Tomcat by C. Baantjer features several scalaways and worse in this Amsterdam mystery, guessing it takes place in the 70's. DeKok is a dinosaur by modern standards paired with the bright much younger Dick Vledder. Cunning Pete is "deader than a door nail" (or is it a doornail?) and B&G is missing 3+ million in cold hard cash. Will Dekok (with a kay-oh-kay) solve the mystery? Interesting story with many possibilities but too many of DeKok's mannerisms tend to get in the way of the action, too much eyebrow fluttering and lip curling for me. How many times do I have to read kay-oh-kay? And there are black cats sitting in every corner, it's a wonder he never tripped over one. Now Vledder I liked, DeKok was meh. Not once did Baantjer refer to Warmoes Street Station as just "the station," it made me feel as though the author assumed his readers were dull-witted. Sadly, the translation was not done well and the editing, I think Intercontinental Publishing was rushing to get the book on the market. I do hope Baantjer's other books are better than this one.
Short Line to Death Book Molly Flewharty Fiction Novel Crime Mystery Action

Who Killed Cock Robin?
Short Line to Death by Molly Flewharty (Goodreads Author) 3504287 Dennis De Rose's review Jan 22, 2024 · edit really liked it Who killed Cock Robin? The game is afoot in Molly Lewharty's Short Line to Death. Tom and Madeline don their deerstalkers as they help Billy figure out who slew crotchety Roberta and underworld Bart. Riding an old Short Line bus from Cross Keys, Pa. to NYC, they feel compelled to lend a hand. What made this book so interesting for me was knowing Molly has now relocated to a small town in Pa. close to the NY border and about 75 miles from NYC. As it turns out, I don't live too far from Molly. I was able to deduce her location from the little hints she dropped in her book. That was too cool. Short Line to Death is a quick fun read. Perhaps you can do a little detective work and figure out where Molly now hangs her hat. I really wanted to give SL to D five stars but there is one small flaw. Paul Dinas' editing has much to be desired. He really needs to step up his game. Molly, please think twice before you have him edit your next book. But do keep writing. It was a pleasure to read such a fun story. The characters are believable and the action moves right along.
