Incredibly compelling nonfiction read
The stories of the twelve brave, hard-working, and brilliant students are compelling, as are the stories of the teachers and administrators working with them to graduate high school and move on to college as the last class to benefit from affirmative action in California. In the course of reading this book, I've learned so much about teaching from the styles of two dramatically different teachers and the sad fact that race continues to be the fly in the ointment of our lives. What was most interesting, in particular, is that this book exposes the nepotism and bribery that casts a long shadow over college acceptance (the recent arrests and trials of wealthy parents who have broken the law to get their kids into their college of choice is nothing new, apparently.) Fascinating, well-written book!
