theatrical version
4 of 4 found this helpful i have only watched the bonus disk, which is the theatrical release. i wanted to watch the original trilogy as they were released before the newest 'star wars' movie is released in the theaters. i am old enough to have seen the original trilogy in the theaters when they were each released. george lucas has taken a series that has been almost universally enjoyed by generations of nerds & has manager to all but destroy his legacy by constantly tinkering with this trilogy (greedo shoots first, c'mon now) & releasing a trilogy of sequels that are in my opinion unwatchable. the treatment of the theatrical disks is not as nice as lucas' 'newer' versions (so, i've heard. again, haven't bothered to watch yet) but at least with this disk we can see the film as it was released in 1977 when nothing like it had ever been seen before. still an entertaining flick, now just leave it alone, lucas.

theatrical version
4 of 4 found this helpful only watched theatrical version disk. all the special effects in the film were done pre-cgi. it's kind of amazing when considering how little the post-cgi adds to the films in the newer versions & in most cases actually distracts from them. these films are actually more closely related to 'king kong' ('33) than 'avatar'. lucas should have release the theatrical releases in true anamophic (sp?) w/s instead of treating them as undesirable stepchildren. these theatrical versions are revolutionary. to 'gussy them up' with digital cosmetics is basically akin to colorization. hopefully the original release versions will get the blu-ray or future technology release they deserve. people liked these movies as they were. quit messing with them lucas, you ass.

japanimation
1 of 1 found this helpful entertaining but extremely 2 dimensional. i was curious to see how this compared to the series 'battle of the planets' which i used to watch after school. even as a tot i thought the show was a pale attempt to cash in on the 'star wars' thing. still, i remember that it did have a space opera running theme that other daily cartoons didn't have.i just watched the 1st episode of 'botp' to compare & 'gatchaman' is definitely superior. 'botp' may be even cheesier than i remembered.i never quite understood the fascination w/ japanese anime/manga. all the characters move exactly the same. the drawings are 2nd rate comic book quality. the dialog is generally inane. by the same token i can appreciate all of those 'flaws'. (i've paid admission to see ed wood films on the big screen) so, if you're a fan of anime you should check this out especially if you have a youngster who likes superheroes, godzilla, etc. to watch it with.
