Beowulf to Beatles and Beyond -- absolutely worth having!
This is perhaps one of the best collections of verse that one can get for an introduction to poetry, as it encompasses several different styles of poetry, song lyrics, and the occasional limerick. A salute and many thanks to my EN300 prof who integrated this into our course work -- I loved it then, and bring it out occasionally, although debating what Dylan REALLY meant in Tambourine Man at 800am/summer session was a bit rough...
A couple favorites: Alan Dugan's "Love Song: I and Thou," and Gwendolyn Brooks' "We Real Cool" --two very different poems and styles, and you can feel the life and rhythm in each poem and lyric.
