An intriguing relic from the past
this is an account of an ancient inscription found near Trincomalee, which was rediscovered in the first decade of the 19th century. The then Chief Justice took an interest in it and, with the encouragement of the Governor of the time, sent a copy to the Royal Asiatic Society in England, hoping it could be deciphered. The paper, for that is what it is, contains no account of whether its secrets were solved, but it is interesting in what it reveals of the past history of the island and the importance of preserving its culture as a basis for governing it effectively.
Various suggestions of what the inscription referred to, as put forward by the local inhabitants, are mentioned, but the ultimate solution, if there was one, is not mentioned. The inscription is not discussed by anyone from a twentieth century or later point of view.
Nevertheless it is interesting as revealing the approach of certain important foreign officials to preserving the history of Sri Lanka and in particular the context in which the inscription was prepared. A good historical item and unique, but it is quite brief.

Middleton-Pollock has a strong voice and she receives a sympathetic backing from the Chicago Hoods.The Hoods ain't from Chicago but that is a minor complaint.

A comprehensive view of 2 years when Lyttelton was changing his style. Good for those who know of him and want to hear him when he was starting to develop his technique and playing style. Good history.
