Lesson learned: A replacement brush may be only a part of the problem.
The Dyson drum brush on our model has a plastic socket that mates onto a plastic drive spindle. With age and use the socket and spindle wear. The replacement drum brush has a new plastic socket but not a new spindle. The drum brush lasted one cleaning before the spindle wore out the replacement socket. An OEM drum brush may have a more robust socket or my spindle my be too worn. I decided to stop experimenting and trashed my old Dyson and bought a new one.
