Very academic treatment, not Modern History
In brief, this book argues for viewing prison gang activity and development through the lens of political economy and economic theory. While there are a few spots where actual events are covered, there is not enough real social history of gang development and not enough reporting on actual events, modern gang structure, and function to make this a compelling work.
The book is somewhat informative. For example, the sections dealing with the Mexican Mafia are well worth the read. However, if you have done any in-depth reading/study on the Aryan Brotherhood....you will find little profit in reading this work. Having said that, the subject has so very little material in actual print that I am not unhappy with having added this one to the collection. Still, if you are looking for insider accounts or a more in-depth historical treatment of any of the major prison gangs then I recommend looking elsewhere.
