Check for UMS / MSC updates before purchasing!
4 of 4 found this helpful These old iRiver MP3 players are great, especially for Line-In and External Microphone recording. Very few other brands of MP3 players come with those options, and iRiver does them both very well.
However there's an issue with many of these old iRivers. They come factory loaded with "MPT" firmware, which means they don't work as standard USB drives. The only way to move files back and forth from a Windows computer and the MP3 Player is with iRiver's proprietary software called Control Center 3. And that software doesn't work on newer versions of Windows! That same software is also the only way to update the firmware and switch it to the UMS / MSC version (both names mean the same thing), which turns it into a standard USB drive that you can just plug in and use.
If you purchase one of these and it still has the original MPT firmware, you're going to need to find a computer using old version of Windows, load Control Center 3 on it, find the new firmware online and update it on the player. And only then will you be able to use it like a storage drive in new versions of windows.
If you don't have an access to an old computer like that, make sure you ask the seller if the player they are selling has been updated with UMS / MSC firmware!
