2017 CONTINENTAL SPRINTER Tubular Road Tire: Black Chili: 28" 700x25
    Jun 19, 2018
Do yourself a favor, buy clinchers.
After all I had heard about the amazing feel of riding on tubulars, how well they corner, how light they are, I was excited to get these tires onto Zipp 303's that I had just spent a fortune on. The 303's were indeed lighter. At just under 1200 grams, they were in fact 300 grams lighter than my Easton EA90slx aluminum clinchers. Not too shabby. Things went down hill from there. First-off, tubulars are pricey. A very nice set of quality clinchers can be had for around $70 per pair. These were some of the cheaper tubulars on the market, and they came in at around $100. Plus $20 in Tufo tape as recommended by several people. Plus $10 for valve extenders. Plus $15 for Stans notubes sealant. So how did they perform? Horribly, actually. The adhesive from the tape is soft, and the tire flexes on the rim. As a result, in combination with the wide diameter, they resist the motion of taking a hard corner - a more than unsettling feeling. To reduce this flexing as much as possible, the tires were inflated to 140 PSI. This creates additional problems. In addition to creating a rough ride, the high pressure in the tires makes them extremely twitchy, turning descents into a nightmare experience. In combination with the increased rim depth of the 303's as compared to the EA90's, the result is something called death wobble. I had never experienced this before. It is terrifying. It has also happened to me on every single descent I have ever done on these wheels with these tires. But wait, there's more. In addition to resisting the motion of a hard corner, this wheel/tires combination also resists the motion of torquing the bike as one climbs off the saddle! I frequently climb off the saddle to relieve my hamstrings and to use some different muscles, I climb much faster that way. Climbing on these is like climbing in mud!!! These tires on Zipp 303's with Tufo tape added NINETY SECONDS to a TEN MINuTE CLIMB. This was astonishing to me, and not an aberration. This is consistent over many trials. Due to the death wobble, they also added 90 seconds to the descent. That is an additional 3 minutes over the course of what is generally a 12 minute round trip. Removing the front tubular and replacing with my aluminum clincher took a full minute off my climbing time and 90 seconds off my descent. Replacing the rear wheel took off another 30 seconds from the climb with no appreciable difference on the descent. But wait... there's more! After less than 500 miles I got a puncture on the rear tire. For comparison, I have 3000 miles on my gatorskin clinchers and they have yet to get a puncture. The Continental Sprinters are absolutely loaded with little cuts and slashes. And if you get a flat, well you're screwed. No one carries an extra tire, and taping it mid-ride would be a ridiculous process. Flat a clincher, just replace the tube. And then there's this fact: The tires are heavy. The addition of 57 grams of tube sealant makes them over 100 grams heavier. The addition of tape of glue to the rims makes them even heavier. The zipp 303's with all this junk are less than 100 grams lighter than my Easton EA90slx clinchers. So to recap, the Continental Sprinters secured with Tufo Tape on a pair of Zipp 303's are: - significantly slower on climbs than a light aluminum clincher - horrible on corners - significantly slower and absolutely terrifying on descents - do not brake well at all - cannot be safely ridden down a mountain, ridden after being left in a hot car, or ridden on hot days due to the effects of excessive heat on the adhesive holding the tire to the rim - are extremely labor intensive - are incredibly expensive If you can find any reasons to ride a tubular over clinchers, good for you. I haven't found any.

A brick, in the best sense of the word
I've been using this Heart Rate Monitor for over 6 years. I bought it refurbished online for about $167 with the Heart Rate Monitor in 2009. You can buy this online for about $35 now. Is it worth it? Absolutely. The HRM by itself costs more than $35, and you will not find a better functioning or more customizable GPS watch, even with all the competition that has sprung up in recent years. Over the 6 years I've owned this product, I've replaced every other piece of electronics I've owned, but not this one. 6 years of consistent use and abuse and its still running strong and I'm sure I'll be using it for years more. I've never had to replace the battery, it still lasts for 10 hours or so with the GPS and days without it, and it functions absolutely as new. The only part of the watch that I've had to replace are the watch straps (not included the HRM, which I lost at the gym and had to replace last week). The straps wear out at the top, but the watch comes with spares. I opted to replace the straps with a spare set from a suunto dive watch because they are more comfortable and bomb-proof. The one drawback is that this unit is an absolute brick. It's large and indestructable and you will get made fun of if you wear it on the soccer pitch, so not for the sensitive ;) It will function during swimming, but it is not comfortable on swims as it is quite bulky.

Nice quality, brilliant look, but slippery when wet
The material is very tough and durable and the textured surface offers nice grip, however if you are planning to do any climbing bring gloves. This grip tape is slippery when wet. Quite a bit more-so than the standard cheap quark.
