Gretsch Guitars G5657T Electromatic Center Block Jr. Single Cut Imperial Stain

Excellent Guitar

I purchased a center block junior from Musicians Friend and I couldn’t be happier. Fit and finish are perfect. The neck is super comfy - very similar to the Electromatic Jet. The unamplified tone is much louder than the Jet due to the open body. The guitar has the Gretsch tone, twang, chime and jangle clean, morphing into an ACDC crunch when played through an overdriven amp. You can get into LP territory by rolling back the tone and you can do a pretty convincing Tele with the bridge pickup. If there’s a weakness it might be in the knobs and Switches but mine are solid so far. It’s a ridiculous good deal for a guitar that plays this well.

Nice Tubes for HI FI

I’m very happy with the Svetlana KT88 Tubes in my Doge 3 integrated power amp. The Svetlanas are the smoothest, most even sounding output tubes I’ve tried thus far including Shuguangs KT88s and Tung Sol 6551s. The Shuguangs seemed a bit spiked, the Tung Sols were punchy with a gainy midrange. The Svetlanas also have nice tight bass, but they seem more smooth and even across the spectrum. Very sweet. My speakers are coaxial Weber hifi speakers with a modded Advent sub.

Great Cartridge

I purchased the AT Microline cartidge to go with my AT lp120 turntable. The performance was so good I thought I should get a replacement stylus to save for the future. This stylus has a micro linear diamond that mimics the shape of a mastering stylus and runs deeper in the grooves than the traditional stylus that comes with the turntable. The result is increased clarity which some perceive as increased high end- but really I think it’s just much clearer sound as the bass and mods are still full strength. It has the added bonus of cleaning up the sound of older records that have been worn by a larger rounder stylus. My worn records from the 70s sound almost new! This isn’t a super high end cartridge and stylus, but it really improves the performance of a decent new or vintage turntable to at least CD equivalent quality, and it sounds fantastic with a tube amp. Recommended without reservation.
