A tiny pocket camera with a great zoom lens.
I was looking for an always-with-you featherweight digital camera that would slip into any jacket pocket, so I was pleased to pick this one up on eBay at a very reasonable price. With regard to picture quality, I have several other cameras – both film and digital – that will produce great quality images provided I can be bothered to carry them with me. All I was asking of this one was that it should produce photos rather better that those from my phone. The Olympus X-820 certainly does this and by quite some margin. In fact, I have been very pleasantly surprised by the image quality. In particular, I really like the way in which Olympus cameras reproduce colours. In addition, the images are both sharp and detailed. For me the only gripe is the lack of an optical viewfinder, but it would be hard to fit one in a camera this size. This issue came to the fore when I used the X-820 on a sunny day in the mountains: the screen was almost impossible to view. Mind you, my very dark sunglasses had something to do with this. In the end, I just pointed the camera in the general direction of my subject and snapped. I may well add a (Kaiser) pop-up screen shade to improve the situation.
Before I bought this camera I looked for internet reviews but there seemed to be very few out there. I did find some negative reviews for another model that looked identical, however. Perhaps they just have different model names for different markets.
In summary, if you think of this as a rather good phone camera with a great zoom, then I don’t think you will be disappointed. Just don’t expect to make any phone calls using it.
