Well-written historical account--a great read
Relates the history of the beginning of U.S. Naval and Marine forces organized under Thomas Jefferon's presidency to defend our merchant ships against the Barbary states and their pirates. Previously, the U.S. was paying these states--Triploi, Tunis, Algiers, and Morocco--to allow our ships access to ports in the Mediterranean. For 15 years, Jefferson tried to negotiate with them, finding it impossible because their religion justified plundering and enslaving nonmuslims. Unlike John Adams, Jefferson wanted to move beyond diplomacy and submission to extortion. He expanded the Navy and Marines and launched the Barbary wars. The book accurately tells the story and documents America's first step toward super power status. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
