You can't rifle a barrel any simpler, or more accurate than this
3 of 3 found this helpful Been gunsmithing for fifty years, designing guns for the last twenty, just ran across rifling buttons a few months ago, as "accessible", have rifled one barrel, easy to do, but demanding. I got the button skewed slightly, less than perfect but very nice for a first try. Drive the button with an exactly sized heat treated push rod, with a center matching the center hole in the push end of the button, ream precisely the lead size hole, ensure both ends of the blank are parallel and square to the bore, and you will get an on-size, beautiful rifled hole, "ironed" smooth as the button, and both the lands and grooves polished by the button. I expect to be rifling my own barrels for the rest of my time as a gunsmith. These are very accurate, "tool making tooling", they will out-perform one, but they don't do miracles, you have to set up for good work, to get a good, beautiful set of lands and grooves, but well worth the time and effort to do it right.
