Superb
1 of 1 found this helpful The Leica Summicron-M 90mm f/2 ASPH lens is simply stunning.
Built to the highest standards, it is like a jewel.
Given its longer focal length, it is larger than many M lenses yet still feels at home on a Leica M240.
It is extraordinary that Leica manage to pack a superb 90mm f/2 lens into this form factor: in other Full Frame systems, this lens would weigh twice as much.
The lens is optically uncompromising.
Its narrow depth of field and longer focal length provide extraordinary subject isolation and superb bokeh.
Rangefinders are intrinsically less accurate at longer focal lengths, but this lens is still reasonably easy to focus and frame reliably. You may require a little practice and expect some missed focus in your early shooting. Older M cameras may also require a rangefinder calibration, as this lens will be less forgiving of rangefinder errors.
Some people report that they do not use this lens as regularly as others in their bag. It is more of a portrait focal length rather than a "walking around" standard lens. Yet all of that is just a matter of habit and shooting style.
It has filled an important niche in my kit, which previously did not go longer than 50mm.
The one complaint I have about this lens is that its in-built hood does not lock when extended, as many of the new M lens hoods do. It is only held extended by the friction of some felt, so the hood often retracts unintentionally.
This is an expensive lens, even when purchased used. It hurt to buy it. Yet I have absolutely no regrets that I did.
If you can afford this lens, I would certainly recommend buying one.
