VAINBERG (AKA WEINBERG) Excellent starting point
This is early Weinberg (aka Vainberg, Vaynberg), and an excellent well-priced CD. He's a prominent composer in the Shostavovich circle, but these early works lean a bit toward Myaskovsky. There's a comforting romanticism, but also more. There's a hint he is heading toward more modern aspects. My suggestion with Vainberg is try these early works first, then progress chronologically later in his works. Much later they do become abstract but are just as rewarding. I have never been disappointed.

MENDELSSOHN WITH AN ATTITUDE!
This is hands down the best recording I have ever heard of Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony No. 4. The piece begins with a "wake up!" bang, which if not played big and loud, will suffocate the whole rest of the piece. Sinopoli is the perfect conductor here. Bravo!

An outlier which sounds fresh. It convinced me to buy other Bortkiewicz CDs, which I have.
