The child in all of us will love this classic story
This simple story of a gentle little ghost delights me now at 77 as much as it did when I was 7. Georgie has an honored role in the Whittaker household. He's responsible for letting the family -- a couple, a cat and an owl on the tree outside the house -- know that it's time to go to bed, prowl and wake up (in that order). But when Mr. Whittaker fixes the loose board in the stairs and oils the rusty hinges of the door, Georgie has nothing to squeak or creak. How can he do his job?
But not to worry! The rain and snow of the following winter put the squeak back in the board and the creak back in the hinges of the door. Georgei has his job again and all is well!

Time Travel in a Believable Way
The author is an American writer who has captured something essential about Britain -- the layers of time that exist in the soil -- and which can be discovered when children accompany an archeologist who digs through centuries to get to the era he wants. In this case it's the children who have a mystical experience related to King Arthur and his knights, and the reader has a chance to see and feel a piece of reality that goes back almost 1500 years.

The best clue was an embroidered sheet. . . .
Like almost all the Maigret novels, this one carries a strong flavor of Paris, which is extremely attractive in itself. But the plot is one of Simenon's best -- a crime committed by people accustomed to being highly respectable who are suddenly faced with destitution and the collapse of a family dynasty. Maigret's team of officers are attractive too, honest, hard-working and devoted to the "chief." There is a great deal of warmth in this story and a very likable minor character as well as unlikable magistrates and attorneys, who cause Maigret more headaches than the villain does.
