It extends the range
I use this antenna for Wemos D1 mini pro, which has exernal antenna connection.
It extends the range relative to the built in antenna. So I can connect to the WiFi from biggest distance.

Wemos D1 Mini (and Mini Pro also) is a good choice
Wemos D1 Mini (Pro) is a cheap but smart MCU for your DIY or home automation projects.
It has less DIO than an Arduino Nano, and it has only one AIO, but there are a lot of built in devices which do not need DIOs.
My favourite device is the built in WiFi, wich can be used to communicate with other MCUs wirelessly or can connect your project with the internet.
The built is ESP8266 chip can be programmed with Arduino IDE. So if you have some experience with Arduino MCUs then you will be able to use Wemos also.
