Excellent Adaptation and Fine Production by Orson Welles
Having recently read Booth Tarkington's novel of the same name, I was very interested in seeing the film version. Happily, this is a truly excellent, faithful adaptation which stands on it's own regardless of one's familiarity w/ the novel. Welles's production has the tight, telling dialogue and original lush camera work of his earlier Citizen Kane - fans of Kane (and of Tarkington) will not be disappointed.
The TCM extras on this particular cut were a nice & welcome addition.

Great CD version of an old favorite LP
Am revisiting some favorite music from my teendom so bought the CD version of one of my favorite Kate Bush LPs (her "mad album" featuring favorites 'There Goes a Tenner', 'Houdini', etc.... highly inventive and "meant to be played loud" ;-). Excellent sound quality and supplemental lyric pamphlet. Really like the cardboard case w/ plastic interior (good CD grip) - best of both worlds.

A joy to get reacquainted w/ a fondly remembered score
Good quality CD of a fabulous Sondheim show. Had the pleasure of seeing it during its Broadway previews and this cast album brought that fun, moving night all back. Interesting, for me, was this: I remember the one fault I found w/ the show was that the first and second acts were (too) jarringly different in tone (very funny 1st act, very dark second) but found in listening to the album that the whole was much more cohesive than I recalled; either age has allowed me to gain a better perspective on the show or the flaw was one of direction - - OR it was reflective of a not-yet-thoroughly-polished final production (like I said, saw it in previews ;-) Inclusion of a very interesting pamphlet on the creation and legacy of the show, very much appreciated. Cardboard sleeve rather than plastic jewel case but no problem w/ that - - takes up less room and seems, frankly, to protect the contents better. Plastic cases also tend to crack frequently or otherwise fail so this package is just as sturdy - - maybe more so.
