Interesting book from the point of view of a woman employee.
I saw this book being spoken about on tv and bought it because I like not only nautical books but stories of brave women, and this is definitely both. Violet writes with a total no-nonsense approach and seems to take whatever befalls her in stride. Not a lot of info on the Titanic itself, but interesting for sure to hear it from a survivor's perspective. The focus of the book is more life at sea on a liner at the turn of the century, and you do get a good picture of that.

Pretty disappointed by this
Really not at all "all you need to know". Much more of the author's own personal experiences, almost entirely in Baja. Spends lots of time on, for example, how is the wine in Mexico. Not even that well written. Some helpful examples on problems you might have, and if you want Baja, you might get something out of this.

Ok.
1 of 1 found this helpful There is quite a bit of good info in this book. I really like that he encourages people to really think about not becoming the Ugly American. Also quite a dose of reality. But, this author has the annoying habit of using exclamation points all the time! Really, this is how he writes! It gets annoying! That, and he does a chapter on the total arbitrariness of the seasons, and complains about the first day of winter, eg, being just a made up date. So he apparently has no knowledge of the movements of the sun. Hard to fathom that he is a syndicated columnist. But you will learn something about Mexico.
