Frustratingly flawed with moments of brillanceI
I have owned this in vinyl for 40 years and wished to upgrade to cd
In many ways this is a Jack Bruce solo record with some great Leslie West guitar.Corky Laing's drumming is almost an afterthought
or missing entirely(Scotch Krotch, and Slow Blues).According to Jack
the 3 of them were heavily into drugs and the album almost wasn't
completed and is reflected in the music.
"Backfire",Token" and "Rock and Roll Machine" are standard hard
rock with Leslie and Jack playing off each other.
Jack's keyboards and haunting vocals stand out on "November Song"
and "Like a Plate".
Perhaps the most effective song is "Sifting Sand where Leslie sings
lead and Jack plays piano, organ, and bass and sings on the chorus.
This remastered version has different mixes on a couple of songs
different from the original vinyl which detracts a little from the
original songs ("token",and "Rock and Roll Machine".)
Unfortunately they never recorded another record.Leslie and Corky
reformed Mountain and Jack did sessions and solo work.

Not as comprehensive as it could have been
All Music Guides are great sources of information. The artists are arranged alphabetically with
a capsule history with important recording information and sideman they have been associated
with. There most important recordings are given short reviews, however many important ones are
not(ex.Carla Bley's Escalator over the Hill)The emphasis of the book is mainstream jazz and there
fore the coverage of Jazz Rock and Jazz Fusion are marginalized.
Another major thing for me personally is that the emphasis is on American Musicians and may
fine European's are not included.
So if you are interested in American musicians mainly this is a good selection.
