Price appealing, quality disappointing
2 of 2 found this helpful Got a set of 3 stubby ratchets, I don't need a stubby all the time but when you just can't get a standard ratchet in these can be great. Having used snap on, draper, sealey, beta, mac ratchets I know a good ratchet. On first glance the finish looks good, the weight and feel of the ratchets makes them feel sturdy but once you try the mechanism you are let down the set I received had a mechanism on the 1/2" and 3/8" ratchets that worked great although a bit loose and almost dry feeling if you know what I mean. It's almost as if the mechanisms were rough cut and thrown in the body with a that'll do do attitude with out the sniff of oil or a bit of grease, you can almost feel the burrs on the ratcheting. Not that I was expecting perfection at £25.99. Its when I pulled out the 1/4" ratchet which had a surprisingly large head for a 1/4" but it was in the testing that this let me down, on removal from the lovely Eva foam tray I fitted a 8mm long socket which popped on nicely, pressed the button to release.... Lovely the socket released beautifully I popped it back on gripped the socket lightly with my left hand and turned the ratchet as if I was loosening a nut it gripped great although I could feel the slop in the ratchet, flipped the switch to tighten and it gripped for a split second before slipping the ratcheting tried again and it was catching then slipping I then was able to spin the socket and the ratchet did nothing flipped the switch again and it gripped perfectly to loosen but not tighten. Hmmmm now 1/4" is a rare socket to use unless it's car interior or tight areas but never the less I was disappointed. I am probably going to pull it apart and fix it myself, but if I were to buy again I'd go with a well known brand for ratchets. I have a pile of bergen tools which have been up there with draper in my opinion but I have ordered the full size ratchets just to see if they are any different, but quality control seems to be non existent when it comes to this company.
