Great to elminate ground loops audio hum...
2 of 2 found this helpful For those that are into audio, you may or may not know about ground loops. A ground loop is when interference occurs by connecting two competing amplifiers from different outlets and ground sources...in my case when I connected my computer to my home theater with older Sony receiver it created a relatively loud hum. You can read about ground loops more on line. Of course its becoming popular to interface your computer with a lot of music on it and videos to home theater be it a modest 2.1 system or fancier.
With an older receiver this little box really comes in handy. Many modern computers have a digital Toslink audio output from their sound card. Many older receivers like my Sony do not have optical inputs...only RCA jacks.
To eliminate a ground loop hum, an optical cable like a Toslink does not create a mechanical ground because data is transmitted digitally via light down the center of a Toslink cable. So the computer with its remote ground source through a separate outlet plug no longer competes with the amplifier in the receiver or the subwoofer connected to my TV.
Works beautifully and wanted to pass word along to others that are trying to solve their ground loop hum and figure out how to hook up a modern music source to an older analog receiver. Digital optical to RCA conversion to connect an old receiver is a great way to send clean sound to an older receiver as well.

7 of 7 found this helpful These speakers need no introduction of course. Their pedigree relative to price is simply unmatched.
If you are debating book shelf speakers...get these. I am a mechanical engineer...huge music gunkie...all genres...massive music collection. They are driven easily with a modest receiver. I suggest a sub woofer. Sound is simply wonderful. After a couple of weeks of listening they start to break in and sound quality just keeps getting better.
If you are wondering about speaker stands, I recommend Sanus Cherry stands...sturdy and beautiful aesthetic...nice cosmetic adjunct to all black speakers..I got the 30 inch high stand model. You want the tweeters around ear level for best sound.
For fun..connect your big screen TV to your PC via HDMI cable and then your PC sound card to your receiver via digital optical TOSLINK. If you have an old receiver like I do with only analog RCA cables, purchase an inexpensive TOSLINK to RCA digital to analog converter....a little powered box...about $11 off ebay and now you have your PC connected to your receiver for all your music files without running thru HDMI which can be used for watching youtube on your big screen. Don't dither with a so called smart browser with your big screen TV. Mine is a Samsung Smart TV. A PC's browser is so much better and easier to navigate by extending displays from PC to TV.
