I learned from experience that these don’t make very good permanent homes if you want a happy fish...
3 of 3 found this helpful I bought these as temporary storage for juvenile bettas after breeding mine or for isolation tanks. They’re honestly not big enough to hold adult ones without the betta becoming miserable. I promise I’m not trying to preach like other posts I’ve read...The self cleaning really isn’t much more than helpful in facilitating weekly 1/4 water changes...so you still need to clean the tank properly. You can spend the same amount of money getting your child a good old fashioned 2 gallon fish bowl that will make your betta live longer and be happier. Not to mention the fun in getting to decorate it more and see the betta have fun swimming around flaunting those gorgeous fins. Heck...even 1 gallon is a huge upgrade in size when you see them side by side. I say this not from a pedestal, but because I made the same mistake when I first bought my son new fish. I thought, meh...they practically live in puddles with horrible water quality so a half gallon tank is perfectly fine, but over time I saw how miserable the majority of my fish were becoming. Not flaring their fins hardly. No more bubble nesting(decent indicator of a happy betta are those bubbles). It broke my heart and I realized I had to do better by them. this was before I even decided to buy more to take a stab at breeding. So, assuming you’re getting this for your kid, realize it’ll probably hurt them to see their fish become miserable and lethargic over time too. I will say though...the ones you buy from a store that come in those tiny plastic cups took a lot longer to get miserable considering a half gallon tank is a huge upgrade for them. If it’s all you have space for...try a globe or square shaped one so they at least have more horizontal swimming space. I had both and the fish that lived in those(they were rescued from living in tiny cups)were pretty happy. Just decided I should upgrade them with the other guys. I also got them tiny bottom filters for aeration too and tiny heaters because my house gets too cold to keep it even remotely close to 80 degrees for tropical fish. Sorry for the rant...just wanted to share what I’ve learned.
