The fortunate death of Joseph Stalin
The Yid is a minor masterpiece of black humour, alternative (not very) history and story telling. You don't have to be a Jew of a certain vintage to fully appreciate it but it helps a bit. Historically it is accurately grounded, dealing with Stalin's last week of life and the pogrom he was preparing to destroy Russia's Jews. The Doctor's plot was the start. From this springboard Goldberg leaps and fashions a wonderful dive into the history of Russia and that of the Jews and manages it all with a such good humour and wit that it almost masks the black truth of the tragedy of that land and those peoples. A book that is not to be missed.
