Occupational Hazards: My Time Governing in Iraq by Rory Stewart
    Dec 23, 2016
    On Winning The Peace
Stewart has an easy style and this helps us move through the complexities of his subject which are numerous. From facing angry mobs, remote bureaucrats and local warlords he keeps an excellent focus on his mission to bring order back to his bit of rural Iraq while expressing his private misgivings about its ultimate chances for success. The content is gritty and the personalities well drawn in this account of the frustration of western expectation following the overthrow of Saddam. This is recommended reading for any student of modern Iraqi history, middle east politics, broader international relations and leaders of prospective liberations by invasion. The best parallel account is perhaps Wesley Clark's account of the Bosnian war ( "Winning Modern Wars") in illustrating the difference in military planning and outlook and how this might have averted the catastrophe of Iraq.
NEW DOUBLE NINE DOMINOES CLASSIC DOMINO SET WITH BRASS SPINNERS QUALITY HOM
    Sep 22, 2017
    Classic table top game
To be a really good game of dominoes it should be audible if not at the other end of the island, at least in the next parish. A great fall back to any rain affected game of cricket when you can while away the time feeling you are back home in the warmth of a Caribbean evening even as you sit in England in three damp sweaters in the dressing room playing dominoes. Outside, the umpires casting pessimistic glances at puddles forming on the outfield. Great tiles, great fun and a favourite with the children although they moan when the box of dominoes was going into my kit bag for a match which would inevitably be called off. Great all round. A classic game.

    Excellent.
Harry Potter's background as chaplain of HMP Wormwood Scrubs and as a criminal defence barrister perfectly places him to draw together the duality present in English capital punishment as a legal fact and the Anglican church and its support for it in an evangelical campaign over hundreds of years . Anyone interested in the history of judicial execution in England and the legal efforts to both maintain and abolish it will find this a fascinating and occasionally terrifying survey. Well written with excellent research and choice of source material, we are shown the liberal but mixed attitudes to abolition from Dickens and Thackeray to the mainstream of the church's opinion and the ongoing necessity of hanging as the expression of God's punitive imperative. Casual readers as well as students will be gripped by this book and the facts behind hanging, especially if read alongside the secular American acadamic, Franklin E. Zimring. In the latter's excellent "The Contradictions of American Capital Punishment", 2003, the Berkley law professor survey's the American experience of execution. Interestingly, the elements of established church and religious fervour in the maintenance of the English model are absent in the pioneer American sphere. The abolition of capital punishment in Michigan in 1846, is a telling fact, when public hangings in England were drawing crowds of thousands of drunken citizens viewing execution as entertainment rather than as salutary message. Potter holds our attention from start to finish telling us much about our society and perhaps tempting or challenging us to consider our real natures.
