Its not quite as smooth running as I expected, not really any better than a Hornby X04 and not as good as modern motors.

Unfit for purpose
The outside diameter is only 16mm. This is OK for checking coach and wagon wheels, but the gauge has a recess for an axle gear and is thus also intended for checking locomotive wheels. Steam locomotive wheels can be up to 27mm diameter, even more over the flanges, and the back of the spokes may be recessed relative to the tyres and flanges. The gauge is therefore not suitable for steam locomotive wheels.
The slot for the axle is about 3.5mm wide, which is not enough for locomotives with axle muffs, such as some Bachmann locos.
Some locomotive wheels have an insulating “top hat” bush. This could prevent the gauge fitting over the axle properly. The axle slot needs to be larger or have a counterbore on each side to accommodate this.
The gear recess is only suitable for gears up to about 14mm diameter. Some are larger than this.

The chrome plating seems very thin and scratches easily. Not what I would expect.
