Arguably the best available set of Mahler's symphonies
Leonard Bernstein recorded two cycles of Gustav Mahler's Symphonies. This is the first, recorded in the 1960s with the New York Philharmonic (with the exception of the 8th, recorded with the London Symphony orchestra). The second cycle has the advantage of somewhat better sound, for the most part, and "live" performances, but the first captures some of the most exciting music making of Bernstein's career. The recordings of the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th are the highlights. This is a packaging of the second remastering of this set of recordings, remixed from the original multitrack tapes to good effect. The recordings of the 3rd, 7th and 9th have the best sound, the 8th the worst. The sound of the 2nd symphony has a rough string sound but that seems fitting considering the aggressive playing. The performances of the 1st and 4th are good without being exceptional. The 8th suffers from the worst sound and seems to pile on the climaxes too hard as a performance. Not only does the performance of the 5th suffer in comparison to the other performances, the later performance with the Vienna Philharmonic on DGG outclasses it in every regard. Bernstein did not find the attempted completions of the 10th symphony to his liking, but his 1970s performance of the one completed movement of the 10th symphony is one of the best things in this collection, coupled with an excellent performance by Janet Baker of the Kindertotenlieder with the Israel Philharmonic. I found this box at a budget price and note that Ebay has more at a discount.
This is arguably the best available set of Mahler's symphonies and is strongly recommended.

Best complete set of John Dowland's Lute Music
Previously I've owned Paul O'dette's complete set of John Dowland's Lute Music on Harmonia Mundi and Jakob Lindberg's on Bis. Nigel North's set on Naxos is the best of the three. All three have excellent performances, but the engineering on Nigel North's set is the best. I was lucky in finding a copy at the original price, b ut in any case it is currently the easiest to find of the three sets.

Some of Bruno Walter's finest performances
I've known these performances/recordings for over 50 years, and they have been favorites all those years. These particular (1995) transfers of old (late 1950s) recordings are fine, superior to previous CD issues. Bruno Walter was famous his entire career for performances of Brahms and the west coast Columbia Symphony Orchestra - mainly the Los Angeles Philharmonic with additional performers from the Hollywood studios - makes a fine sound with the excellent engineering of Columbia's staff. One of the top choices for this particular paring. The physical product was as advertised - like new. And the price was below the going rate when the product was new.
