Best Book Available on Jean
Garry McGee has done a great job researching and retelling the story of Jean Seberg in this new book on the somewhat overlooked star of "Breathless", "Airport", "Paint Your Wagon" and a number of forgotten (but excellent) films like "Lillith" and "Bonjour Tristesse". McGee has come up with a lot of fresh material on Seberg, such as interviews with her sister Mary Ann, high school acquaintances, her first husband, the French-born Francois Moreuil as well as her third husband Dennis Beery. Interviews such as these really give "Breathless" an edge on the only literary predecessor on the actress: Played Out: the Jean Seberg Story", which by comparison is just a perfunctory bio on the Seberg, not nearly as interesting or as illuminating. Another great source McGee was able to access was French actress Mylene Demongeot who co-starred with Jean in Otto Preminger;s "Bonjour Tristesse" (the follow-up to their disastrous "Saint Joan" which was Jean's much-publicized acting debut of the year before). Mylene remained frends with Jean until the end of her life and her commentary provides a rare up-close perspective on the troubled star as human-being and friend. I hope this book rekindles interest in Jean Seberg and her films, as well as success for its own sake, which it more than deserves.
Barbie: That Girl

Cute doll--great outfit
If you're a doll collector you might want to buy this set just for the outfit. I was going to use it for a Poppy Parker doll until it arrived and I noticed how much bustier and hippier the Marlo doll was than my Poppy doll. Afraid it might look baggy on her, I decided to just keep the doll as-is, since I remember the TV show from my childhood and have a fair amount of nostalgia for it. (For the record, it would probably fit most 12" dolls with "Barbie" type bodies. Poppy is flatter chested and more narrow-hipped than Barbie so when it comes to redressing her, it's better to choose from Mattel's "Francie" line). I got my "That Girl" doll for $25 although she typically goes for more. I think average price (as of Spring 2021) is about $50 for her (NRFB). I didn't want to pay that much, since I was only after the outfit, so I waited for a "deal". The only thing I would caution people about is her face is prone to paling. This is common with the vinyl on certain dolls as they age. So make sure you buy one with good coloring and I wouldn't recommend displaying it in direct sunlight.
Cat People / Curse of the Cat People DVD Val Lewton horror double feature cult

Slinky Simone
Compared against the 1982 remake with Nastassia Kinski, the original "Cat People" may seem like slow going, but once you acclimate to it's slinky pace and noir style, it more than holds its own, and in fact is a much more even and consistent film than its spawn (in which gorgeous art direction, and Kinski's haunting presence, were both undermined by gratuitous gore and gross-out gimmickry). The 1942 film is presented here in a pristine transfer complete with subtitles and good DVD extras that include a phone-in commentary by the Cat Woman herself, Simone Simon! She rightly regards the film as a treasure. The film is well-cast, well filmed and beautifully lit, with a couple of avant grade sequences and effects (I don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave them as a surprise). It's almost more of a psychodrama than either a horror or monster movie, since we're never sure how much of "the curse" is real and how much exists only in Irena's mind. So it sometimes gets a bad rap for not being scarier. But if you don't go in with that expectation, you'll recognize it as a masterwork of eerie suspense. Included on the same disc is the sequel that's not REALLY a sequel, the misleadingly-titled "Curse of the Cat People", in which (spoiler alert!) the now-dead Irena returns in the form of a ghost to comfort her former husband's new daughter. The child is dreamy and introspective and prone to inventing imaginary friends, so naturally when she starts talking about Irena, she is not believed, which only intensifies further her relationship with the (now benevolent) ghost. Like it's predecessor, it's another psychodrama with supernatural overtones, only in this case, the menace and suspense are supplied not by Cat People or even Irena's ghost, but by some spooky neighbors. The dotty old mother, an ex theater actress, also supplies most of the film's comic relief, but her daughter (who played Irena's "sister" in a walk-on in the first film) is chillingly unnerving, brimming as she is with lethal jealousy for anyone who can captivate the mother who refuses to recognize her. For my money, these are two great films, beautifully restored and perfect for your next rainy day under the covers!
