Great for playing out
0 of 2 found this helpful I have both this model (MPC-500) as well as the MPC-1000. Obviously the MPC-1000 is order of magnitude better than this unit, however the MPC-500 has its place: battery operated, easy to carry around (I wouldn't take my MPC-1000 to a gig).
If you plan to program beats on this unit you are going to be frustrated. Better to program them on the computer and export them as midi files into this unit. The screen is small and you are diving through a lot of menus. Also, the pads are not as responsive as other units.
What I use this for is to load up my pre-programmed sequences, and then use the pads to mute/solo different tracks to bring in and out parts while I play live. For this purpose, the unit is great.

Amazing groove box
This is very hands on and flexible. Once you get to know the layout, you can quickly make some cool beats. It's very geared for on-the-fly stuff rather than pre-programming a few sequences and then hitting play. No menus to dive through, so you are playing it more like an instrument than programming a drum machine.
Very fun.

This motherboard is very well crafted
