Much ado about Edo
If you are looking for the Cliff notes providing a thumbnail sketch on the history of kimono, this is the book. This generalized history is succinct, accurate, and very dry. It gives brief accounts of the types of kimono over the centuries, including theatrical and religious robes. What you will not find are details on symbols and motifs that make these garments most alluring. The dye techniques - from yuzen to shibori to stencils - are sadly missing. As a quick study, it works. If it's more in depth information you seek, look elsewhere.

THE requisite kimono resource book
1 of 1 found this helpful If you must choose ONE book to use as a resource for your kimono buying addiction, this is it. Liza Dalby, the ONLY foreigner to have ever studied to become and served as a geisha, writes brilliantly about one of her passions. She covers the history, anthropological underpinnings, current fashion trends, and even how to fold a kimono with such appreciation for the garment, it shows in every sentence. The illustrations are key, with complex color combinations easily detailed so that even the nascent aficionado can understand. A phenomenal book!
