Paper Mario, Nintendo 64
Feb 01, 2018
Great RPG for both beginners and veterans
Just a great game. Manages to take all the fun elements of the Mario world and its characters and pairs them perfectly with a simple to understand but still compelling turn-based RPG battle system. I'd read that this was originally meant to be a sequel to Super Mario RPG for the SNES, but, as I've never really played that, I can't speak to how similar it really is. Nonetheless, if you grew up with that game but have never played Paper Mario, I'm sure you'll want to give it a chance.

Banjo-Kazooie (Nintendo 64, 1998)

An N64 Classic
Probably the best of the Rare "collectathons". Takes that fun element of Super Mario 64 (among others it borrows from) and takes it up a notch but not in a mind-numbingly tedious way. I'd probably have to say that I prefer Super Mario 64, but if you've already played that and are looking for a new but similar 3D platformer for the system that expands upon Mario and adds a greater touch of humor and characterization then you should definitely check out Banjo-Kazooie.

Super Mario Sunshine (Nintendo GameCube, 2002) Complete Very Nice

Perhaps as classic a platformer as Super Mario 64
If you loved Super Mario 64 and/or any of the other "collectathons" for the N64 then you should love Sunshine. The mechanics are a little different (obviously you didn't have a hose/jetpack apparatus in any of those other games) and even things like the long jump are not possible. At the same time, though, the FLUDD gives the game a little something extra. And the general ambience of the game and all of its stages might be enough to warrant buying it. Just a whole lot of colorful fun. And if you still want to play some without the pack, there are a number of special stages that'll make you wanna throw your controller through a wall each time you misjudge a leap and Mario falls to his demise.
